“The Grateful Dead Movie” on DVD is a thorough snapshot of the band
in 1974, taken from concerts held in October of that year at Winterland.
Shortly thereafter, they took a break from concertizing and touring.
A lot of footage  is devoted to the fans, known as “Deadheads,” in an
effort to fully capture the “feel” of the proceedings.

Although the original movie was released in 1977, this release on DVD
is from 2004. A nice feature is on disc two which contains many bonus
songs performed in their entirety. These songs were not included in the
original movie. It’s great to be able to watch the interaction between
Weir, Garcia and Lesh,  while they improvise on these selections.

Disc two also includes a large photo gallery and a couple of “Making of”
documentaries. When you add these films to the full-length commentary
on disc one, you recognize that more than seven hours of footage are
available on this two-disc set! You can also choose between different
sound options, including theatrical and 5.1 stereo sound.

Overall, this set is quite worthwhile!
