I just finished watching a very enjoyable DVD from the CMV label
entitled, “Chris Botti & Friends: Night Sessions – Live in Concert.”
This 2002 release was recorded during the previous year. It
featured the Grammy award-winning trumpeter,
vocalist Shawn Colvin (1956 – ) and Sting (1951 – ) performing
at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, with backup musicians on
keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, and percussion.

At a running time of approximately 75 minutes, the set
predominantly featured Pop and Contemporary Jazz tunes,
such as “Moon Over Bourbon Street,” “Lisa,”
“In the Wee Small Hours,” and others. Judging by his
ubiquitous session work with many musical luminaries, Botti’s
gorgeous tone is obviously in demand. Here, his main
emphasis was on playing softly during melodically compelling
romantic ballads. During the bonus interview, Botti (1962 – )
discussed the work required to maintain his signature level of
musicianship and control. Other bonus features included a
printed biography and interviews with Sting and Colvin.

I’d highly recommend this DVD for those who like
Smooth Jazz. This is music to be enjoyed without being
“challenged,” and there’s no harm in that!
