“Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis, Season One,
Volume One” contains four episodes filmed for television
in Chicago, during 2005. The 96-minute disc I watched
was released under the LRS Media label, with episodes
entitled, “The Golden Horn,” “The Jazz Singers,”
“Contemporary Jazz,” and “The Altos.” The featured
artists included Clark Terry, Roy Hargrove, David Sanborn,
Al Jarreau, Phil Woods, Marcus Miller, George Duke,
Lee Ritenour, and others.
As a Jazz insider, award-winning pianist and noted radio
personality, Ramsey Lewis (1935 – ) was the ideal host
of these programs in which noted musicians discussed
and played their music, before a studio audience.
The format of each episode was a combination of interviews
and performances, often with Ramsey Lewis joining in for
a part of the program. This wonderful learning tool was
also well recorded, and I look forward to watching other
episodes in this series.
Bonus extras included additional interviews and printed
biographies of each of the 11 musicians that were featured
on these discs. By the way, the “house” backup band
was also great. This DVD deserves top marks.
